HOUSTON (AP) -- An 81-year-old Houston man is accused of killing his wife and leaving her body in bed for a couple of days until police stopped to check on the woman.

Johnny Walter Bass was being held without bond Monday on a murder charge. Jail records didn’t list an attorney for him.

Meanwhile, police said an autopsy has been ordered on the victim, 74-year-old Jewel Bass.

According to investigators, two officers went to the couple's home Sunday on a welfare-check call.

The officers said Johnny Bass opened the door and said everything was all right.

When the officers asked about his wife, they said Bass told them she was in bed, and that he'd shot her in the head on Friday.

Officers entered the home and found the body.

The motive for the shooting was not yet known.
