He's been the governor of Texas for over a decade, but Saturday Republican Gov. Rick Perry announced he's running for president in 2012.
The news sparked mixed reaction in the Rio Grande Valley.
Lana Vieh said she would not re-elect President Barack Obama, instead Perry has become her likely choice.
"I think he believes in the (U.S.) Constitution and that it's not outdated-that it's the best form of government that has ever been formed," Vieh said.
But Ruben Cantu disagreed and said Perry would no be a better leader than Obama. Cantu wishes Perry well, but said he won't give him his vote.
Carla Noe sides with Vieh and is firmly set in her decision to support Perry. "(I support him) because he's for home schooling families, he's against abortion and he's for God and not against him."
Noe also said Perry would be a better leader than Obama because she said the current president nothing more than "A puppet."
Esmeralda Casas doesn't define herself as Republican or Democrat and said she just wants a leader who will get to work and move the country out of its desperate financial situation.
"I guess they just need to cut spending where it doesn't need to be and spend it on what we do need," Casas said.
She doesn't think Perry is that man, however, she doesn't think Obama is either.
Although opinions vary on Perry’s bid for president, one subject does bring some agreement.
"I want somebody with backbone that will stick to what we send him up there to do," Vieh said.
