MCALLEN, TEXAS (AP) -- The area's best hope for substantial rain in months is nearly gone, leaving behind only paltry rainfall totals and strong breezes.

Don scooted across South Texas early Saturday morning and was expected to cross the border into northern Mexico by later in the day.

South Texas, like much of rest of the state, remained in an extreme drought.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Don to a tropical depression late Friday and said it would produce only a couple inches of rain.

Locals began watching the next area of disturbed air in the Caribbean while hoping Don was an effective drill.
