Two teens are behind bars after being accused of for burglarizing the home of Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell.
It all happened at the mayor’s home off North Stack Circle near Lake Harlingen between 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators told Action 4 News that the family was home but two teens were able to steal $9,000 dollars worth of electronics and other items without them knowing.
Mayor Boswell told Action 4 News that he was pleased with the police department's investigation.
But he noted that a power failure knocked out the security alarm to his home a couple weeks ago.
Because there were no signs of forced entry, Boswell believes the teen burglars may have entered his home through an unlocked backdoor.
Boswell said only he, his wife and their dog were home at the time.
He said his family has been in their home for 23 years but it's been more than 15 years since their home has been broken into.
"The lesson for me is don't take anything for granted," Boswell said. "Set your security alarm and lock all your doors and windows."
Police said the burglary was reported early Wednesday morning while detectives were able to identify the two 14-year-old and 15-year-old suspects hours later.
Officers arrested the two teen suspects around 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Their names are being withheld due to state laws protecting the identities of juvenile offenders but investigators said they lived in an adjacent neighborhood that was “walking distance” to the mayor’s home.
The two teens are expected to remain in custody at the Darrell B. Hester Juvenile Justice Center in San Benito.
Police told Action 4 News that they were able to recover a considerable amount of the stolen property.
