More than 48 middle school students took part in this year’s Math and Science Summer Camp at UTPA in Edinburg.
They are spending two weeks living on campus and working on several projects.
Pre-teens, like Nathan Ondeyo, hope this camp will give them an early start to their career.
"I think it will make me be successful in my career which is either engineering or biology," he said.
All week long, the students built a rocket and on Thursday afternoon they took them outside for a test run.
Their goal is to get them perfected in time for Sunday's competition.
The Parents will watch as the students blast off their rockets into the air, but instead of fuel the rockets run on water.
"Because were going to put compressed air into it and the air is going to push on the water so it will make it go up," sixth grader Daisy Garcia said.
Teacher Diana Garza says it is not all about rockets.
The kids are also learning what college is all about.
From eating at the cafeteria to sleeping at dorms, she hopes that all the kids, and especially the girls, will show an interest in math and science.
"It's a great opportunity for the girls to be exposed to the different things whether it's science engineering or math," she added.
Regardless of gender, the goal for the camp is to make math and science fun.
Next week the kids still stay even busier as they move on to building robots.
