A Mexican national is behind bars after leading Border Patrol agents on a drug chase in La Joya.

It all happened on the eastbound lanes of U.S. Expressway 83 in La Joya around 6:52 a.m. Wednesday.

Border Patrol agents arrested 28-year-old Juan Hugo Anorve-Lorenzana on federal drug charges.

Court records show that Border Patrol agents spotted a green Mitsubishi Galant and a black Chevy Silverado traveling together.

Border Patrol agents pulled alongside the Mitsubishi Galant, which was low to the ground, and spotted a blanket covering something in the backseat.

Anorve-Lorenzana pulled over but then sped off when Border Patrol agents approached the car.

The 28-year-old bailed out of the car at a dead end on a rural road and scaled a fence but was caught while fleeing on foot.

Anorve-Lorenzana told investigators that he recently arrived and was offered work and a place to stay by drug smugglers.

The Mexican man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Thursday morning.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Anorve-Lorenzana until a Tuesday morning hearing.
