Brownsville school board member Caty Presas-Garcia tells Action 4 News Brett Springston decided to step down after less than two years at the helm.

Springston, who started with Brownsville ISD in December 2009,decided to applied for a job as superintendent of schools in Huntsville, Alabama which would put him close to family.

He received word last week he didn't get the job -- but still decided to leave the school district.

"It is to my understanding he wanted to research in other districts, I know that with this opportunity he's been afforded, i believe we were told he would be an hour an 15 minutes away from his daughter" said Caty Presas-Garcia.

BISD board members accepted his resignation on Wednesday, appointing Dr. Carl Montoya as interim superintendent.

Montoya told Action 4 News that his main focus will stay on educating the students.

"I enjoy these types of things and its a good district, and they are a good team, the board is a good team, the administrators are a good team and I think we can start working together and start making sure things move forward" Montoya said.

Springston, now marks the fifth superintendent BISD has had  over the past 10  years.

All of which the school board has had to pay out.

As BISD  deals with the turnover, Cathy believes this will not have an impact on students as long as the teachers maintain structure.
