Pair arrested for copper wire theft in Harlingen

A Harlingen couple is behind bars after they allegedly stole a large amount of copper cable.

Harlingen police arrested 48-year-old Michael Dane Tanner and 43-year-old Mitzi Jo Ashley on Wednesday.

The couple is accused of working together to steal copper wire from a property on the 2400 block of Shirley Street.

Investigators told Action 4 News that a witness called police about a theft in progress.

Ashley allegedly acted as a lookout while Tanner stole wire attached to a pole.

Officers allegedly found wire cutters and three bundles of wire at the scene.

Both Tanner and Ashley appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Thursday morning.

Tanner was issued $10,000 dollars in bonds while Ashley was issued $5,000 dollars in bonds.
