Gunmen injured in cross-border shootout at Mission's Chimney Park

Authorities are reporting a shootout involving U.S. federal agents and an elite team of Texas Rangers has injured at least three suspected drug runners along the Rio Grande at Mission's Chimney Park.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said in a brief statement that American law enforcement offiials came under heavy fire from the Mexican side Thursday morning.

It all happened with a Texas Rangers recon team allegedly tried to seize a drug load.

The DPS statement did not indicate that any U.S. law enforcement officers were injured but Action 4 News has learned that three Mexican gunmen were injured.

DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange told the Associated Press that the shootout took place in Hidalgo County, about 240 miles south of San Antonio.

Action 4 News has learned that that the shootout took place along the Rio Grande near Mission's Chimney Park.

DPS said the shootout began after a suspicious vehicle on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande was spotted along with two boats that authorities suspected were being used to transport drugs.

Law enforcement officials reported that Mexican authorities have been notified prompting an investigation on both sides of the border.
