The director and eight guards at a Tamaulipas state prison in Reynosa may be facing criminal charges following a jailbreak where 17 inmates escaped in a tunnel.

The Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) confirmed that the escape tunnel was discovered around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

A count of the inmates revealed that 17 prisoners are missing.

PGJE officials said the escapees dug a tunnel from a laundry room on the eastern unit of the prison to an area outside.

Investigators said the prison director and eight jailers may be facing criminal charges for their possible involvement in the escape.

PGJE officials did not release the names of the escapees, the prison director or the guards involved in the incident.
