A Harlingen mother is behind bars after she allegedly left her children home alone and fought with police when they tried to arrest her.
Harlingen police arrested 29-year-old Kristina Rocha on child abandonment and resisting arrest charges early Sunday morning.
Investigators told Action 4 News that officers were called to an apartment complex off the 600 block of Rangerville Road around 5 a.m. Sunday.
Neighbors told police that they heard a child crying at a nearby apartment.
Officers investigated and found the door unlocked with two children, ages 3 and 6 years old, alone inside a bedroom.
Rocha, who was later identified as the children’s mother, returned home about 40 minutes later.
Investigators said Rocha appeared to be intoxicated and was also irate and uncooperative with officers.
Police said Rocha struggled with them when they tried to place her under arrest.
Investigators told Action 4 News that Child Protective Services was notified and that the children were released to the custody of their grandmother.
Rocha appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Monday morning where she was issued $11,000 dollars in bonds.
As of Tuesday morning, the Harlingen mother remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
