Alma Herrera spent much of Sunday passing out fliers in McAllen with her 19-year-old daughter, Perla Alvarado’s, picture and description on them.
"We're passing these out and we're hoping someone has seen her and will help find her," Herrera said.McAllen police said Alvarado’s boyfriend reported her missing on Saturday around 5:30 a.m.Police said they suspected foul play since they couldn't verify the boyfriend's accounts of what happened the night Alvarado went missing.
Herrera said she suspected her daughter had a troubled relationship with her older boyfriend.
"He's so jealous with her - he doesn't let her talk to any of her guy friends or even girl friends,” Herrera said. “She didn’t even want to go out that night but he kept insisting."
After missing for over 24 hours, the teen’s family finally heard from her.
They said she called and said she was coming home.
Herrera said although her daughter was alive, she had bruises on her face and body, bite marks on her arms and scratches on her back.
Herrera said she never witnessed the possible abuse, but hopes the experience will be convince her daughter to end the relationship.
"Perla has said she feels pity to leave him because he doesn’t have anywhere else to go,” Herrera said. “But she needs to focus on her education she can do better."
McAllen police aren't releasing details on how, where or in what kind of condition they found Alvarado.
They detained her boyfriend for questioning but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.
