Biologists at the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge are excited by a documented sighting of a male moutain lion a the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

Remote cameras captured the powerful felines image during early March.

The U.S. Fish & Widlife Service released the photos to Action  4 News over the weekend.

The remote cameras had been set up to take night pictures of the endangered ocelot and jagaurundi.

But biologists were surprised when they reviewed the footage and found a mountain lion.

Although the wildlife refuge is comprised of tens of thousands of acres, It has been years or decades since a moutain lion has been officially documented there.

Wildlife experts believe the mountain lion was not born on the refuge but may be just passing through or looking to establish a territory of its own.
