While some victims of sexual abuse come forward and tell their stories other remain silent.
Elizabeth Shull, executive director of Cameron County Children's Advocacy Centers Inc., including Monica's and Maggie's House tells Action 4 News, " It's very common for this to happen but it shouldn't happen and kids should be able to tells what's going on at that moment.”
Shull says the number one reason victims don't come forward is fear.
"They instill fear in these kids, I mean they'll tell them you know we'll hurt your family if someone finds out you know they threaten their own lives, the kids and say I'll hurt you", said Shull.
Monica’s house is a place where victims can tell their stories with a trained forensic interviewer.
"We want the kids to feel at home when they're coming into the center", said Shull.
As the interview is being conducted authorities are able to watch the interaction in an observation room.
While Monica's house is a safe haven for victims, Shull adds it's also about education and parents need to talk to their children about this sensitive subject.
Along with Monica's house, Maggie’s house also provides services to victims of abuse in Cameron County.
