A little over 100 people gathered for an Ash Wednesday mass at the University of Texas at Brownsvile's Salon Casia.

Students, faculty and Brownsville residents came together to celebrate the beginning of Lent.

Lent lasts for the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Bishop Daniel Flores, who led Wednesday’s service, said it’s important to turn to faith, especially during these hard economic times, and with the violence that continues to erupt just south of the border.

During the season of Lent, Christians are also asked to fast.

To help with that process, some give up certain items, such as food or other favorite activities.

Bishop Daniel Flores Said he is giving up red meat, while Eloy Alvarez is going to stay active in church and try to stay away from his wife’s potato salad.
