A Matamoros man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after he was allegedly caught smuggling more than 28 pounds of cocaine into the United States.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Pedro Torres-Martinez on federal drug charges over the weekend.
The 32-year-old Matamoros man drove up from Mexico at Brownsville B&M International Bridge in a green Nissan Sentra on Saturday.
Customs officers sent Torres-Martinez to secondary inspection where authorities found 12 packages with 28.88 pounds of cocaine hidden in the driver and passenger sides of his car.
Torres-Martinez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio in Brownsville on Monday morning.
Judge Recio denied bond for Torres-Martinez until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
