Norteño superstar Ramon Ayala is back at home recovering after falling ill during a performance at Brownsville's Sombrero Festival on Thursday night.

Paramedics rushed the award-winning singer to the emergency room of the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.

Ayala's manager Roman Pedraza told Action 4 News that the singer spent a "few moments" in the hospital but was released.

Pedraza said Ayala had a cold and overexerted himself.

Ayala is back at his home in Hidalgo were he is resting and recovering.

The Norteño singer was scheduled to perform to this weekend in Chicago but Pedraza said the shows will have to be postponed due to doctor's orders to rest for one week.

Pedraza said the doctor's order should not affect a performance scheduled at Hidalgo's BorderFest on Sunday, March 6th.

Sombrero Festival

Ayala took the stage and started performing around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Norteño star sang his old classics such as "Tragos Amargos" for a crowd of hundreds of people.

The Hidalgo-based performer did not speak during the show but a band member told the crowd told that Ayala felt sick earlier in the day.

The band member announced that Ayala had a repiratory problem and even went to see a doctor.

The same band member said Ayala didn't want to disappoint his fans and decided to continue with the performance.

"He didn't want to cancel the show," Pedraza said. "That's the type of professional he is."

Show Goes On

A couple songs after the announcment, Ayala took a break and had to sit down while another accordion player stepped in and another bandmate sang his songs for him.

Ayala was seen being treated by members of the Red Cross in an area behind the drum set.

The show continued with Ayala's group Bravos del Norte singing his songs while an ambulance and a Brownsville Fire-Rescue truck arrived at the scene.

Paramedics were leaving the stage area with someone on a stretcher into an ambulance.

Security guards prevented the stretcher from being filmed while paramedics loaded it in the ambulance.

Fans left the festival around midnight.

Health Issues

The Brownsville incident follows reported health issues for Ayala had in late December 2009.

Ayala was arrested after performing at a Beltran-Leyva Drug Cartel party in Mexico.

Mexican authorities let Ayala out of jail for medical reasons.

Ayala was later cleared of wrongdoing and has since performed at BorderFest and other events in the Rio Grande Valley.

Pedraza stressed that Ayala just had a common cold and did not have any other health problem.

Ramon Ayala Press Release
