An Edinburg man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to deliver six AK-47 assault rifles to the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 23-year-old Lee Roy Perez on Tuesday.

Court records released on the case on Thursday show that Perez was headed into Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International bridge.

Officers sent his Ford Taurus secondary inspection where they found the six assault rifles in a hidden compartment behind his rear seats and rear quarter panel.

Perez allegedly told investigators that provided high-powered weapons to the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa.

The Edinburg man said he was supposed to get paid $300 dollars to deliver the weapons on Tuesday.

Perez allegedly admitted to crossing at least 50 other weapons and assault rifles in the past.

The 23-year-old man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Courte Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Wednesday morning.

Court records show that Perez is a United States citizen who lives in Edinburg.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Perez until a Monday morning hearing.
