A 19-year-old man is behind bars after customs allegedly found more than 7.5 pounds of heroin inside bean cans he brought from Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Bryan Cesar Martinez at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge late Monday night.
Court records released in his case show that he came from Reynosa in a taxi cab around 10:41 p.m. Monday.
Martinez told customs officers that he was in Guatemala visiting his grandmother and was headed to Boston.
Customs officers sent him to a secondary inspection where they ran X-Rays of four bean cans he had among his items.
Authorities found about 7.58 pounds of brown heroin worth about $606,705 dollars inside the bean cans.
Martinez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Tuesday morning.
Court records show Martinez is a United States citizen but his residency information was not immediately available.
Judge Ormsby denied bond for Martinez until a Friday morning hearing.
