An investigation is underway after a missionary from the Rio Grande Valley died shortly after being shot in Mexico.
Pharr police tell Action 4 News that the couple was traveling on a Mexican highway about 60 to 70 miles south of Reynosa when they were confronted by gunman in a black pickup truck.
Police Chief Ruben Villescas says the gunman fired at the couples pick-up truck striking 59-year-old Nancy Shuman Davis in the head.
Nancy's husband Sam Davis then drove at a high rate of speed not allowing to be stopped by the gunmen until reaching the Pharr International Bridge to get help.
"Nancy Davis was rushed to a nearby hospital in McAllen in critical condition", said Chief Villescas.
Nancy Davis did not survive meanwhile her husband was unharmed.
Right now the Pharr Police Department is working with other agencies including DPS, ICE, FBI, and Mexican authorities to solve this case.
The agency however is also asking for the public’s help.
"We do have a witness that was sharing that she saw the black pickup truck and there were several males inside this black pickup truck so that's all the information we have right now," said Chief Villescas.
The Mexican government has issued a statement condemning the attack adding that it will launch a full investigation to find those responsible.
The American Consulate in Matamoros had previously issued a warning about carjackings and robberies in the same area where the couple was reportedly attacked.
According to the consulate website, the warning for San Fernando was first issued in November and then reiterated on January 7th.
