Zapata soldier killed in Afghanistan will 'likely' be buried in Mission

The Zapata soldier who died following an improvised bombing in Afghanistan will "likely" be buried in Mission, the Zapata County sheriff said.

Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez also told Action 4 News that 22 year-old Pfc. Ira Benjamin Laningham IV worked for the county before joining the Army.

Laningham was a jailer with Sheriff's Gonzalez' office from June 28, 2008 until June 29, 2009 when he resigned in order to join the Army.

Sheriff Gonzalez added that Laningham's body could arrive to Zapata as early as next week, though a date has not been set.

Laningham's family lives in Zapata, but Sheriff Gonzalez said that the 22-year-old soldier would be buried in Mission next to his friends and comrades in the military.

According to the Department of Defense, Laningham died Friday from wounds he suffered during an attack by insurgents at Logar Province, just south of the Afghani capital of Kabul.

Laningham was based out of For Polk in Louisiana and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

According to his Facebook page, Laningham attended Zapata High School and Texas A&M International University in Laredo.

His page also shows that he was married to Stephanie Laningham, who is also a soldier in the Army. Their wedding date is listed as October 18 of 2010.
