"We never close,” Jovita Chase, manager at Brownsville Coffee Shop said no Christmas Day. “We have a tradition - we're open 365 days out of the year."
Brownsville Coffee Shop on International Boulevard doesn’t even close on Christmas, but why would they, if managers there said Christmas Day is one of the busiest days for the restaurant all year.
"We get a lot of customers that come from out-of-town,” Chase said. “They come to visit their families and they came as children and now they are coming as adults - so it's kind of a tradition."
But with the tough economic times and limited number of jobs available, the busy workers there weren’t exactly complaining to have a day full of work.
"We’re very thankful (and) very grateful that the Lord has blessed this restaurant for the past 35 years," Chase said.
Organized crime doesn't take holidays either, so protecting the country's entry points is also a 24/7, 365 days a year job.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers along with U.S. Border Patrol agents were hard at work at the Los Indios Bridge.
Day in and day out, the agents do much more than protect the borders from illegal immigration.
They also ensure no illegal firearms, money, or drugs got past their watch – in or out of the country.
There's always someone in need of a ride and for taxi services that includes on Christmas Day as well.
However, unlike Brownsville Coffee Shop, taxis weren’t too much in demand.
For workers, that meant a long day.
"It's super boring because there's not a lot of people calling in,” Yaritza Reyes said. “I’m getting so tired."
