More than 1,000 pounds of marijuana is off the streets after Border Patrol agents spotted a group of smugglers aboard a boat, inflatable raft and an inner tube.

It all happened along the Rio Grande south of Donna around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The men jumped in the water and swam to Mexico.

The Border Patrol agents spotted a rope tied to a tree stump on the Mexican side of the river that went to the American side of the river.

The rope led Border Patrol agents to the boat, the raft, inner tube and ten bundles of marijuana.

Authorities believe the drugs are worth close to $850,000 dollars on the streets.

Border Patrol agents told Action 4 News that ropes are commonly used by smugglers to speed boat crossings on the Rio Grande.
