Two burglary suspects are behind bars after they thought they could get away with buying Christmas gifts with a stolen check.
The couple's alleged crime spree started in McAllen and ended at an H-E-B grocery store in San Juan.
San Juan police told Action 4 News that they arrested Rodolfo “Rudy” Montoya and Cynthia Hernandez after they used a stolen check to buy an Xbox and skeet shooter.
Investigators said the couple must've thought they would get away with the crime because Rodolfo even wrote on the present, “From: Daddy Rudy.'
Sgt. Rudy Luna with the San Juan Police Department spoke to Action 4 News about the case.
"In the holiday seasons we see a rise in thefts,” Sgt. Luna said. “We encourage people to keep their belongs out of sight in the vehicle and don't leave them inside."
The couple allegedly stole a checkbook and some weapons from an off-duty Texas Department of Public Safety state trooper Monday.
The weapons were recovered but Montoya now faces forgery and theft charges. He was given a $160,000 dollar bond.
Hernandez is charged with theft and given a $5,000 dollar bond.
The couple is expected to face burglary charges in McAllen.
