AUSTWELL, TEXAS (AP) -- At least 237 endangered whooping cranes have made their way from Canada to a Texas refuge where they will spend the winter.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported, for its Monday editions, that biologists last week counted 199 adult and 38 juvenile whooping cranes at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
Crane specialist Vicki Muller says food is plentiful, with crabs and wolfberries, plus there is an abundance of drinking water.
Muller says it appears the migration, which began in October, is nearing completion.
Experts say 263 birds were in the flock that migrated north last spring. Biologist expect as many as 285 cranes to reach Texas this season.
