Authorities reported that about 640 acres of brush went up in smoke during a Wednesday afternoon wildfire in Starr County.

The National Weather Service reported that the fire took place four miles east of the rural Starr County community of Santa Elena.

The rural community is located off FM 755 between Rio Grande City and U.S. Highway 281.

The cause of the wildfire was not immediately known but is under investigation.

The Rio Grande Valley is no longer under a red flag warning but dry conditions and strong winds continue in the area.

Residents are asked not to burn trash outdoors.
