Six alleged gunmen are behind bars following a battle south of the border in Ciudad Mier.
Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported the gun battle took place around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
In a statement released Friday morning, SEDENA officials reported that soldiers were patrolling the city when they came under fire.
The gun battle ended with six members of an organized criminal organization being arrested.
SEDENA officials did not release the names of the men or their affliation but reported seizing two assault rifles and ammunition.
Ciudad Mier has been the focus of intense fighting between the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas drug cartel.
Hundreds of residents fled to neighboring cities on both sides of the border.
Some have returned after Mexico's federal government sent thousands of soldiers, marines and federal police to the region.
