The City of McAllen’s landfill is filling up and that is why they’ve began a new program called the Black and Blue Campaign.
The purpose is to create a “greener” McAllen.
The program will be launched January 3rd of next year and will be split into four quadrants.
Team green will be picked up on Monday, yellow on Tuesday, orange on Wednesday and red on Thursday.
“The black is for trash and the blue is for recycling," said Elvira Alonzo Deputy Director of Public Works.
The earth friendly program is also more cost-effective since both bins will be picked up the same day.
Saving the city more than $200,000 dollars a year.
"We will see some savings in our maintenance in terms of the longevity of the vehicles,” said Alonzo. “We won’t have to replace them as often."
The city's move will be a small, positive step impacting our environment.
