Authorities are reporting that a juvenile and seven other suspected members of the Zetas drug cartel are behind bars south of the border in San Luis Potosi.
Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported it happened while soldiers were out on patrol on Federal Highway 57 outside the city around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
Soldiers spotted a truck and four SUVs parked along the highway.
When the soldiers went in for a closer look, the convoy tried to flee the scene but was stopped.
Soldiers arrested the juvenile and the following eight men:
• Román Juárez Mendoza, 33 years old, aka “El Chino” or “El Gordo”
• Juan Martínez Sánchez, 27 years old, aka “El Olivo”
• Roberto Ezequiel López Martínez, 34 years old, aka “El Macetas”
• Ricardo Sánchez García, 22 years old, aka “El Chaparro”
• América Cristal Soto Mata, 27 years old, aka “La Vaquita”
• Arturo Abenamar Cruz López, 27 years old, aka “El Hugo” u “Oscuro”
• Luis Carlos Leal Puente, 27 years old, aka “El Charli”
All eight of them were identified as suspected members of the Zetas drug cartel.
Soldiers reported seizing their vehicles, $7,600 pesos in cash, stolen license plates, communications equipment and weapons:
• 5 assault rifles
• 5 handguns
• 1 fragmentation grenade
• 25 ammo clips
• 531 ammunition cartridges
San Luis Potosi is the capital of a state with the same name. It's located about 5 to 6 hours south of the Rio Grande Valley.
