An Elsa businesswoman is facing criminal charges after reportedly writing hot checks worth tens of thousands of dollars.

According to the Hidalgo County District Attorney's Office, Irma Viola Gomez recently wrote a hot check to a local business owner.

The District Attorney’s Office had been looking for her for at least five months.

She was spotted in pharr and arrested on Wednesday and booked into the Hidalgo County Jail.

On Thursday, Gomez was officially charged after the district attorney's office said she confessed to writing the check.

Investigator Charlie Vela told Action 4 News that charges will be upgraded against Gomez as early as Friday for writing at least three additional hot checks, including one for more than $10,000 dollars.

The 38-year old Elsa woman is expected to be served a warrant on Friday and rearraigned on additional charges.
