Tejano star Emilio Navaira is soon expected to make his first public appearance in the Rio Grande Valley since a March 2008 accident in Houston.

Promoters said Navaira is expected to hold a concert with guest Jay Perez at the McAllen Convention Center on New Year’s Day, which this year falls on a Saturday.

It's been a long road to recovery and a comeback for Navaira, who has already made limited appearances at events in Texas.

Navaira spent three days in a coma, underwent intense surgery and had to go through physical therapy following the March 2008 DWI wreck.

The Tejano singer was sentenced to 72 hours in jail and two years probation after pleading guilty to being drunk while driving his tour bus following the Houston show.

The Houston case was considered a probation violation for an earlier DWI case in San Antonio.

A judge in the San Antonio case sentenced Navaira to one month of house arrest and another year of  probation back in May 2009.
