A Roma grocery store told Action 4 News that they are collecting items for refugees fleeing drug cartel violence in Ciudad Mier.
More than 300 people are taking refuge south of the Rio Grande in Miguel Aleman.
Almost all the residents of Ciudad Mier have fled following reports of continued gun battles between the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas.
Managers with the Riverview Family Center in Roma said they are acting as a collection point to receive donations to help refugee families.
Organizers said they are collecting:
• Canned Goods
• Non-Perishable Food
• Water
• Diapers
• Blankets
• Towels
• Toilettries
• Clothing
Organizers said there currently no collections centers in McAllen, Harlingen or Brownsville.
They recommend that churches or other groups collect items and then bring them to the store.
Organizers said that officials with the Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF) from Miguel Aleman will pick up the items at the store and get them cleared through Mexican customs.
The Riverview Family Center grocery store is located right off Expressway 83 in Roma just before the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Bridge.
