Vanessa Hinojosa was diagnosed with diabetes back in September of 2009; she was only 29 years old.

"I look at it as a positive thing", said Hinojosa.

Since her diagnosis it has been an emotional journey.

"Now I know and now I can change my life", said Hinojosa.

At first Hinojosa didn't know what to expect. "I thought oh my gosh, I'm going to live the rest of my life with this horrible disease. I'm going to lose my arms and legs I'm going to be like all these people that can't see, I'm going to have to have insulin,", said Hinojosa.

Today Hinojosa say she no longer needs medication to control her diabetes.

"I'm doing really, really well, my blood sugars are really under control, I exercise and eat right and it's a life style change", said Hinojosa.

Hinojosa attributes some of her success to the Valley Baptist Diabetes Education Center.

The center is nationally recognized by the National Diabetes Association.

Despite living with diabetes, Hinojosa says she will continue moving forward one day at a time. "I look at this diagnosis as a positive thing. Now I'm healthier, than I was last year and I'm in a different place now ", said Hinojosa.

There is also a diabetes support group that meets on the first Thursday of every month at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
