The Mexican Army reports that soldiers have freed five alleged kidnapping victims and killed three gunmen at a shootout in San Fernando.
It's all happened on Friday but Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) did not release information about the incident until Wednesday morning.
SEDENA reported that soldiers were investigating a tip about people being held hostage in San Fernando when the troops came under fire.
Three suspected gunmen were killed in the battle and the five people were freed following the shootout.
Soldiers reported seizing firearms, grenades, ammunition and two vehicles.
San Fernando is about two hours south of Matamoros and Rio Grande Valley.
