Mexican media outlets are reporting the that Gulf Cartel is denying involvement in a recent attack on a military post in downtown Matamoros.
Several people were injured when a grenade exploded outside at a Mexican army garrison in downtown Matamoros on Wednesday morning.
Federal authorities are investigating the attack but so far, no suspects have been identified or arrested.
The El Universal newspaper is reporting that four narcobanners appeared at four pedestrian overpasses in the Tamaulipas border city on Friday morning.
The banners read:
“Nos deslindamos de los atentados a las fuerzas militares, federales, estatales, municipales y la ciudadanía en general. Nuestra guerra es contra Los Zetas. Atte. CDG”
In English, the banners state, "We are clearing ourselves from the attacks on military forces, federal state, local and the general population. Our war is with the Zetas. Signed Cartel del Golfo."
Authorities removed the banners but not before many witnesses had seen them and reported on them via Twitter and other media outlets.
The Matamoros-based Gulf Cartel has been engaged in a protracted war with its former allies Los Zetas since February.
Both groups are fighting to control lucrative drug trafficking and smuggling routes along the border.
