A hungry shoplifting suspect is drying off in the Brownsville City Jail.

Brownsville police told Action 4 News that the shoplifting suspect is behind bars after jumping in a resaca.

Investigators said it all started when a man stole a plate of a food from an H-E-B supermarket off FM 802 and Paredes Line Road.

The man fled but jumped in a nearby resaca to escape police.

Numerous police cars and emergency vehicles were called to the resaca.

Police said the man was pulled to safety and charged with Class C misdemeanor theft.

The theft suspect allegedly told police he stole the food because he was hungry and didn't have money.

The man's identity is not being released until his Sunday morning arraignment.
