AUSTIN, TEXAS (AP) -- Prosecutors say a South Texas lawmaker wanted to "line his pockets" while using his power to help a businessman later convicted of Medicaid fraud.
State Rep. Kino Flores pleaded not guilty Tuesday as his criminal trial began in Austin. The Democrat is accused of multiple perjury and ethics violations dating to 2003.
Travis County Assistant District Attorney Gregg Cox told jurors that in one instance, Flores took a bribe from the owner of a chain of Rio Grande Valley medical clinics in exchange for favorable legislation.
Flores' attorneys denied those charges during opening arguments.
They say Flores was paid for legitimate work involving other interests of imprisoned businessman Eliseo Sandoval.
Flores plans to testify. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
