Authorities are now confirming the identity of a man who allegedly put a grenade in an 11-year-old boy's backpack.

Harlingen police arrested 46-year-old Dedrick Thompson on child endangerment and probibited weapons charges on Thursday evening.

The incident took place on West Monroe Avenue between North D Street and North E Street.

Police said Thompson approached the boy when he got off a school bus and put something in the boy's backpack.

Family members told Action 4 News that they found a grenade inside.

Authorities sealed off the area and the Brownsville Police Department bomb squad was able to dispose of the grenade.

Investigators located Thompson at a nearby home where authorities also found another grenade. Sources said that grenade was live.

It's not clear how Thompson got the grenades but an investigation into the case continues.

Thompson's landlord told Action 4 News that he had been living there for nine to 10 months.

The landlord said Thompson suffered from schizophrenia and was possibly bipolar.

Neighbors said they would see him talking to himself but never thought he was a threat until Thursday.

Thompson appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Friday morning where he was issued $60,000 dollars in bonds.
