Jorge Miranda Prior Mugshot
An Edinburg man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly tried to kill his wife and then stabbed himself when he didn't succeed.
Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called out to an apartment off Juan Street just west of Edinburg around 2:39 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators told Action 4 News that they found 54-year-old Jorge Miranda on the couch with a stab wound to his lower stomach.
Miranda’s wife told deputies that he had a gun and tried to shoot her while she was in the bathroom.
The woman ducked and the gun allegedly jammed making Miranda unable to fire it again.
A motive for the attack was not clear but the couple’s son wrestled the gun away from Miranda.
Deputies said the 54-year-old man responded by going to the kitchen, getting a knife and stabbing himself.
Paramedics rushed Miranda to the McAllen Medical Center where he was treated for his injury.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said the wound was not fatal and that Miranda will be facing attempted murder charges.
“The couple have some very deep rooted personal issues between them,” Sheriff Treviño said in a written statement. “Mr. Miranda’s medical conditions exacerbated their tumultuous relationship which led up to the shooting.”
Sheriff Treviño said Miranda will be arrested at his hospital bedside and arraigned by Justice of the Peace on Monday where bond will be set.
Miranda has a prior DWI on his criminal record and will remain in the hospital for treatment of a prior medical condition.
