Maria Ipina walked into a San Juan courtroom ready to hear her fate.

Ipina was charged with possession of a controlled substance and given a $100,000 bond—despite not having a criminal record.

Maria’s troubles started Monday after police found 21 prepared, clear plastic bags of cocaine in a cereal box inside her home.

Police say they received a call from an anonymous caller who said Maria’s four-year-old child was trying to sell marijuana in the apartment complex.

“She was going door-to-door attempting to sell it,” said Sgt. Rudy Luna with San Juan Police Department.

Action 4 News visited Maria’s home to try and get answers, but no one answered the door. Those living around Maria said they were not surprised by the accusations.

“It does not surprise me,” said Maria Pena. “Your kids should be the most important thing in your life and you should take care of them.”

Sarah Reyes said Maria is putting her child in danger and at such a young age.

"The kid is little and doesn't know what she's doing,” said Reyes. “She's putting him in danger."

San Juan police said this was the first time they have had an incident like this involving a four-year-old and it is a concern for them and the community.

“We are not going to tolerate this type of behavior,” said Sgt. Rudy Luna. “We will convict to the highest charge anyone that involves children in this type of activity.”

In the meantime Maria could face an additional charge of child endangerment.
