Military helicopters are hovering across the Rio Grande from the UTB campus but Mexican officials are remaining tight-lipped about a series of shootouts south of the border in Matamoros.
The shootouts were reported at several locations around the city starting late Friday morning.
Students at the University of Texas at Brownsville campus were able to see Mexican military helicopter activity on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande all throughout Friday afternoon.
Campus officials and Brownsville police said they had not received any advisories about any situation of risk south of the border in Matamoros.
Residents posted eyewitness accounts on Twitter and then videos on on-line services such as YouTube and yfrog.
Users on Twitter reported a shootout in the Fraccionamiento Victoria neighborhood just south of Matamoros H-E-B supermarket around 11:45 a.m. Friday.
The reports of the shootouts continued south down Avenida Pedro Cardenas.
Another shootout was reported near the Mundo Nuevo convention center and the Universidad Autonoma de Tamulipas campus.
A Twitter user reported the use of fragmentation grenades and assault rifles even further down the road.
Mexican officials are remaining tight-lipped about what's going on even though one of the incident was report right outside a Matamoros police building.
Tamaulipas State Police, whose building is blocks away from the one of shooting sites, said they could not comment on the incident over the telephone.
Matamoros city police could not be reached for comment. One of the on-line reports said that one of the shootouts took place right in front of their building.
Officials with the Mexican Navy said a statement would be released later.
