Maria Peña is having a hard time recalling her horrific experience that happened early Thursday morning.

The 80 year old woman whose lived in her Los Laureles home for over 60 years told Action 4 a stranger opened her front door, sneaked into her kitchen holding a gun and demanded cash.

The mother of 12 thought for sure it was the end for her but her son, who was also with her, wasn’t about to let that happen.

Maria explained her son managed to grab the masked gunman and take him outside where they began a struggle.

Thankfully Maria said her son was able to take the gun while the suspect got away.

“In hurry to get out there I understand he ran into a ditch,” said Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio. “The officer responded within 9 minutes and they went looking for the guy…they found the guy there in the ditch…he was trying to get out so they arrested him."

According to Sheriff Lucio the person responsible is 20 year old Francisco Hinojosa.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and currently sits behind bars.
