Parents of students from several schools have turned to Action 4 News after their children are stuck in classrooms with no power or air conditioning.
Tropical Storm Hermine zipped through the Rio Grande Valley on Monday night leaving relatively minor damage but at least 26,000 homes and businesses without power.
Parents from students at several schools called Action 4 News about power outages at schools in Harlingen, Rio Hondo and Los Fresnos.
Among the schools without power are:
- - Long Elementary School in Harlingen
- - Rio Hondo Elementary School in Rio Hondo
- - Laureles Elementary School in Los Fresnos
- - Liberty Memorial Middle School in Los Fresnos
Officials canceled classes in Brownsville and San Benito but Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District officials wanted to maintain normal school hours.
AEP crews are working in Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo Counties to restore power to all customers.
Harlingen CISD officials said they are keeping students on campus but working to get the lights back on a Long Elementary School.
Birdie Rodriguez with the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School district said there were some power problems early in the morning but all schools had power shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials from Rio Hondo could not immediately be reached for comment.
