At least eight killed in Panuco shootout

At least eight people have been killed in a 15-hour shootout between the Mexican military and a group of armed men in a town near the border between Veracruz and Tamaulipas.

The Mexican Amry (SEDENA) reported that soldiers were investigating a tip about a safe house in Panuco, a town an hour south of Tampico in the neighboring State of Veracruz.

According to a written statement from the SEDENA, soldiers arrived at the home and came under fire from military-grade weapons and fragmentation grenades around 9 p.m. Sunday.

The El Universal newspaper reported that the ensuing standoff finally ended around 2 p.m. Monday.

The newspaper reported that six gunmen, one soldier and one civilian were killed in the battle.

Another five people were reported wounded while another six people are arrested.

Identities have not been released of the those killed, injured or arrested.

The SEDENA reported seizing heavy-duty weapons including 12 assault rifles as well as three vehicles.
