The Port of Brownsville is moving “full steam ahead” with its newest project a marine highway that transports cargo faster, cheaper and it’s even eco-friendly.
Brownsville Port Director Eduardo Campirano said the Port Of Brownsville is one of eight marine highway designations announced yesterday by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“Now they considered 35 applications for marine highway designations and only approved eight,” Campiriano said.
The Port of Brownsville was one of those eight chosen.
The Marine Highway Program was introduced by the government this year in April and its purpose is to promote more business freight along America’s coastlines and waterways.
The program would save not just time but money.
“It basically leaves the Port of Brownsville and goes on a straight line to Manatee which is about 800 nautical miles,” Campiriano said.
He explained the distance by truck in turn would be about 1,400 to 1,600 miles.
Campirano told Action 4 News that the bigger plus is that this program will help produce hundreds of jobs and improve trade in hundreds of goods.
“Beer, sodas, construction materials, floor tile all of these commodities are then distributed through that area throughout the southeast and throughout Florida and into the east coast," he said.
But best of all, Campirano stated is that the program is environmentally friendly.
“It needs so much less fuel, it means so less emissions from truck traffic that you’re taking off the road and it also is great for traffic safety,” he said.
