This parent is angry. He’s alleging Raymondville High School head football coach Alex Leal used his position to stop his son from playing football in another school district.

In fact, at this hour, Raymondville’s school board is in a meeting deciding Leal’s fate.

In this taping you hear someone saying, "So being the fact that the semester just started, they changed him over and of course he wanted to be out of the science class he was in."

Eduardo Orozco claims the person on the recording is Raymondville Football Head Coach Alex Leal, talking about helping Orozco’s son get into certain classes so he wouldn’t transfer from Raymondville to Rio Hondo High School.

Orozco also says Leal offered incentives to him for his healthcare business to keep him from transferring.

This is the recording again, "He asked me this- Mr. Orozco asked me this- would I please talk to Dr. Cantu to see if I could help him get some patients for the work that he does.

I told him I would talk to Dr. Cantu and that day I called Mr. Cantu and asked him, ‘Dr. Cantu, would you help me with Mr. Orozco?"

In the recording the person speaking continues to say he never accepted any incentives, but when Orozco still transferred his son to Rio Hondo, he says that’s when Leal used his position to prevent his son from playing football.

"I said you know what coach this isn't fair, he goes, well then he'll just have to sit out if he goes to Rio Hondo," Orozco said.

But Superintendent Johnny Piñeda said a 3-A UIL committee made up of superintendents and coaches, decided that Orozco did not transfer his son for academic purposes.

"The UIL district committee made a motion and voted that this student had transferred over for athletic purposes and as such may (not) participate in varsity sports for the upcoming school year,” Piñeda said.

Orozco said he plans to appeal this ruling at the UIL headquarters in Austin.

Piñeda said that the school board would decide if Orozco’s grievance had any merit and if Leal violated any rules at Tuesday’s meeting.
