Harlingen Police, in cooperation with San Benito PD, made its first arrest in connection with a deadly shooting late Saturday night.

"All day our investigators have been working hard and heavy in this case,” Harlingen Captain Hector Leal told Action 4 News. “They developed information that one of the persons involved in that shooting resided at this residence."

At about 4 p.m. on Sunday, the SWAT teams from Harlingen and San Benito surrounded the home of Jose Luis Vega, 21, on the 200 block of Colorado Street after he barricaded himself inside one of the rooms.

The standoff lasted a few minutes.

Vega turned himself in.

He was handcuffed and taken into custody by San Benito Police.

"We have determined that he was one of the individuals involved in the incident," Cpt. Leal said.

The shooting happened just past 10:30 p.m. on the corners of B Street and Harrison in downtown Harlingen.

By the time police responded to the call, the two men, Edgar Villanueva and Agustin Gonzalez from Mercedes, were unresponsive.

One was lying on the ground, while the other was sitting on the passenger’s side of the white Mustang they had been driving.

"At this point, we believe there's more people involved but it’s too early to give the number of people or who they are," Cpt. Leal added.

Vega now faces two counts of capital murder. He was booked into the Harlingen city jail, where he awaits his arraignment.

The motive for the shooting has not been established, but Harlingen's Gang Erradication Unit is also investigating the case.
Police said they believe at least one other person may be involved in the shooting.

They ask anyone with information to call the Harlingen Area Crime Stoppers at (956) 425- TIPS.
