Brownsville traffic stop yields coke, meth & ammo

Two men are behind bars after a Monday evening traffic stopped yielded dozens of pounds of cocaine and meth as well as hundreds assault rifle magazines and ammunition.

Brownsville police arrested 21-year-old Hector Castillo and 31-year-old Fernando Gonzalez under drug charges Monday evening.

A patrol officer pulled over a 2007 Nissan Altima on the 400 block of FM 802 around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers allegedly found 56.23 pounds of cocaine inside the car.

An investigation led police to a storage facility in the westside of town where authorities found 25.74 pounds of crystal meth and 584 assault rifle magazines and 300 rounds of ammunition. 

Both men appeared before Brownsville Municipal Judge Phil Bellamy on Tuesday morning where they received bond.

Police said Castillo is a Brownsville resident while Gonzalez is from Matamoros.

Both men remain in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
