DWI Suspect: Tessa Jasper Estrada
A Harlingen woman is facing criminal charges after she ran allegedly ran over and killed a teenager while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Harlingen police arrested 25-year-old Tessa Jasper Estrada on the 2500 block of Spur 54 around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Court records released in her case on Tuesday morning show that she had left the Butt Wild Sports Bar off Expressway 83.
Estrada told police she was driving on the left lane of Spur 54 where she saw a man was lying on the road.
The 25-year-old woman told officers she drove over the man, got out of her car and found him gasping for air.
Investigators said 17-year-old Reynaldo Gonzales died from his injuries.
Police records show officers initially charged Estrada with DWI.
Estrada refused a field sobriety test but had to submit to a mandatory blood draw because of the man's death.
The test results were not immediately available but Estrada told officers that she stopped drinking around midnight, about two hours before the fatal accident.
It's not clear if charges against Estrada will be upgraded but appeared before Harlingen Municipal Judge Robert Guerra on Sunday morning.
Jail logs from Sunday morning show Estrada was booked in the Harlingen City Jail under an intoxication assault charge.
Estrada did not appear to have a criminal record while public records show she lives of Ball Street on Harlingen's northside.
