Rio Grande Valley residents headed south of the border over the Fourth of July holiday will not be able to buy alcohol.
Tamaulipas and 11 other states are holding elections for governor and other important races on Sunday, July 4th.
Under Mexican law, alcohol cannot be sold in the 24 hours before the election and cannot be sold on election day.
Stores, restaurants and bars in Nuevo Progreso, Matamoros, Reynosa and the rest of Mexico stopped selling at midnight Friday.
No alcohol will be sold on Saturday or Sunday.
The law applies equally for Mexican citizens and tourists.
The sale of alcohol will resume after on Monday after the election.
Mexico’s “La Ley Seca” or “Dry Law” dates back to after the Mexican Revolution and prohibits the sale of alcohol during major elections.
